2017 La Trobe University Iftar dinner

The 9th annual La Trobe University Iftar dinner was co-hosted with the AIS on 15 June 2017.

This year being La Trobe University’s 50th year anniversary added a special touch to the program with a diverse range of individuals particularly from the consular corps, sporting, interfaith and muslim community attending to mark the occasion. The Pro VC Kelly Smith MC’ed the event highlighting the proud history of embracing diversity and offering excellence in academic education.

The Vice Chancellor Professor John Dewar mentioned the University has a proud history of promoting cross-cultural understanding and embracing diversity as it plays an important role in enacting that spirit within society. This year there were 2 special guests – Ahmed Fahour (Australia Post CEO) who talked to theme of “What a blessing : In praise of education and charity”. He was followed by Asad Ansari who talked about the University’s ability to get the most of their students both academically and personally. He also mentioned the first iftar dinner held at La Trobe University’s campus was back in 1979, in a humble setting an academic and some Muslims students broke bread to mark Ramadan.

The Sufi Music group performed a couple of classical musical pieces before Ahmet Keskin gave the vote of thanks and exchanged gifts with the VC.
