Victorian Parliament Iftar 2021

On the Tuesday 27th of May 2021, The Australian Intercultural Society along with Victorian Parliamentarians co-hosted the 15th Victorian State Parliament Iftar Dinner, MC’d by Michael Rowland, ABC’s News breakfast host.

The program began with a Welcome to Country performed by Uncle Andrew Gardiner from the Wurundjeri people followed by a recitation of the Qur’an by Sheikh Alaa El Zoom. Afterwards guests were welcomed by co-host with speeches from the Honorable Ros Spence (Multicultural Affairs Minister), Mr Neil Angus (Shadow Multicultural Affairs Minister) and AIS executive director Ahmet Keskin whose speech focuses on the importance of interfaith engagement. All speakers commented on the importance of holding these gatherings where people from all walks of life are able to be in the company of others and experience the diversity of what Melbourne has to offer.

The evening’s keynote was delivered by Victoria’s inaugural Gender Equality Commissioner, Dr Nikki Vincent, who spoke about gender equality in the public and private sector. Dr Vincent shared her vision for a fairer society where every Victorian is equally valued regardless of their gender, religious or cultural background.

The highlight of the evening was a powerful spoken world titled “She Is” by Zaynab Farahas which was inspired by her mother.

The night concluded with floor reflections and a vote of thanks, offered by Kimon Taliadoros, CEO of Football Victoria which wrapped up a night of respect, compassion, and camaraderie among all groups of people who attended.
