Mosque Open Day

MOSQUE OPEN DAY

The Australian Intercultural Society will hold its first Mosque Open Day for 2008 at Sunshine Mosque on 30 March.

Such events are significant in terms of them enabling individuals making up the culturally diverse backdrop of Australian society to learn about and understand each other.

Based on the premise that a deeper level of awareness rests on education, the Mosque Open Day presents a forum to effectively educate non-Muslims about the fundamental teachings of Islam.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the architecture and physical space of a mosque and its significance, as well as gain an awareness of the key tenets of Islamic faith and practice.  They will also have the opportunity to ask questions and interact with members of the local Muslim community.

The program will include a tour of the mosque and observing Muslims engage in congregational prayer.

The visiting group was then segmented into smaller factions that were assigned an official who explained the fundamentals of Islam, with a particular focus on Prayer and the function of the Mosque.  The intrigued guests also had ample opportunities to ask questions to their guide as the events was structured as an open forum to learn, discuss and compare religious values and practices. The day concluded with offerings by the Mosque in the form of tradition Turkish finger food and beverages over continued discussions. A gift of a rose plant was delivered to the Imam of the Mosque by the visiting congregation

The Open Day will be held between 2pm and 4pm.  All are welcome.
