Recipe for Peace

Women from the Australian Intercultural Society Women’s Network and the Monee Valley Peace Network met in Flemington on 26 February for their monthly Cooking Class.

Having commenced at the end of 2006, a group of ten women have been meeting regularly to learn about each other and realise common aims and pursuits, while discovering how to how to prepare a special dish from a variety of cultural traditions.

“Food is an extremely powerful way to bring people together,” says Sariye Baskocak, Project Manager from the Australian Intercultural Society Women’s Network.

“We live in a time where many people misunderstand Muslims, especially Muslim women.

“These classes are a way of allowing people to see beyond the stereotypes and misconceptions and learn from one another.”

They will be cooking Sri Lankan cuisine and Bush Tucker in the upcoming months.
