ACU Curriculum Project

A curriculum research project jointly organised by the Catholic Education Office, Australian Catholic University and the Australian Intercultural Society is now underway.

The project was initiated as a result of the relationship between the Australian Intercultural Society and Australian Catholic University, and based on the urgent need for the respective communities to learn about each other and overcome intolerance and bias, most importantly through education.

Experienced Religious Education teachers from five Catholic schools and five Muslim-based schools will be assembling once a month to explore ways to overcome the stereotyping ad prejudice that exist within young people and develop accurate, contemporary and critical guidelines for teaching about Islam in Christian secondary schools, and teaching about Christianity in schools with Muslim majorities.

The IRIS Project, with the theme, Interfaith Understanding & Interaction aims to discover principles of best practice for inter-religious education in secondary schools.

The first meeting was held on Thursday 28 February at Australian Catholic University.  Teachers and researchers will meet ten times throughout the year.
