Latrobe University   25 August 2009
On the 25th of August 2009, La Trobe University hosted its inaugural Iftar Dinner Program co-organised with the Australian Intercultural Society. The university Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, academics, community leaders and students attended the event that brought people from different cultural backgrounds together around the dinner table to break bread.  The La Trobe University will continue to host Iftar Dinners in the coming years. La Trobe officials believe that Iftar Dinners play a great role in the enhancement of multiculturalism.

UK Consul General    27 August 2009
UK Consul General, Stuart Gil hosted an Iftar dinner on the 27th of August 2009. Amongst the thirty-two guests that attended the dinner, there were prominent Muslim leaders. During the program Hafiz Adem recited verses from the holy Qur'an with English translation. Towards the end of the program there were reflections from the floor. Muslim guests thank the Consul General and his wife for their kind invitation. Mr Orhan Cicek, Executive Advisor of AIS also presented Mr. Gil a gift of appreciation.

Shepparton Council   29 August 2009
The Australian Intercultural Society organised an Iftar dinner in collaboration with the Isik College Shepparton campus. The multicultural dinner was hosted at the Shepparton Council hall. Shepparton Mayor Geoff Dobson, police inspectors and local Muslim leaders attended the event that aims to enhance multiculturalism in the region.

Australian Catholic Uni - APCID  1 September 2009
The Australian Catholic University co-hosted an Iftar dinner with APCID on the 1 September 2009. Muslim and Catholic leaders, academics and community leaders attended the event that aims to further strengthen the bonds of friendship between the Catholic and Muslim communities. Bishop Christopher Prowse of the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne and Iqbal Patel, President of AFIC also attended the event.

The Monash University hosted an Iftar dinner that brought people from all walks of life together. Academics, Muslim leaders, community leaders and students attended the event that aims to promote social inclusiveness and harmony in the multicultural society of Australia.

Victoria Police     3 September 2009
Victoria Police continued its traditional Iftar Dinners that aims to establish close relations with the Muslim communities of Victoria. This significant event originally initiated by the AIS has now become a tradition for the Victoria Police that hosts the event annually. The event helps break down barriers and establishes mutual understanding and trust between the Muslim communities of Victoria and Victoria Police. Through Iftar dinners, Victoria Police have been playing a great role in promoting multiculturalism in Victoria. Chief Commissioner, Simon Overland also attended the event. Orhan Cicek, Executive Advisor of the AIS presented Simon a gift of appreciation for his support for the multicultural Iftar dinners.

Federal Parliament     8 September 2009
Senators and Members of the Federal Parliament of Australia hosted an Iftar dinner on the 8th of September 2009. The dinner was co-organised by Federal MPs Maria Vamvakinou and Susan Ley with logistic support provided by the Australian Intercultural Society. The Iftar dinner aims to bring together the members of the Parliament and prominent Muslim leaders to establish mutual understanding and cooperation.

Victoria University    9 September 2009 Victoria University hosted its first multicultural Iftar dinner  in 2009 at one of its Melbourne campuses. Over eighty guests attended the inaugural event. In his opening speech, the Vice-Chancellor of the Victoria University welcomed guests who were from different backgrounds and cultures. Prof Hurriyet Babacan of the Victoria University spoke about the importance of interfaith dialogue and multiculturalism. In his keynote address, Author/Journalist, Omer Attila of the AIS, emphasized on the spiritual and physical significance of Ramadan.

Buddhist Community   10 September 2009
The
Quang Minh Buddhist Temple hosted an Iftar dinner on 15 September 2009. It was an extraordinary event in which Muslims and Buddhists came together to break bread on a most spiritual occasion. In his message, Venerable Thich Phuoc Tan, Abbot of Quang Minh Temple said, "Thinking of others when carrying out any action is a sign of pure karma, and AIS is an excellent example of a community that reaches out. The dream of global oneness is both inspiring and commendable. If the mere idea of oneness can bring happiness, then the event itself is likely to bring genuine bliss. The context of multicultural Australia is a rare opportunity to pursue the goal of oneness. I hope all can participate in this event wherever possible."

Journalists & Media        14 September 2009
One of the most significant dialogue events of 2009 was the Media & Journalists Iftar dinner held at the prestigious Windsor Hotel on the 14th of September. The event that aimed to break down barriers between the media personalities and the Muslim community was a great success. The MC of the program was Jon Faine, famous radio personality of the ABC. The guest of honour, Prof David de Krester, Governor of Victoria addressed the guests consisted of editors, directors, and  journalists from Melbourne's media corporations, academics from Melbourne universities and Muslim leaders. Dr Helen Skoze of the Human Rights Commission was amongst the guest speakers who emphasized the importance of such gatherings. The evening concluded with the Annual Award Ceremony, during which the AIS presented its prestigious F. Gulen Peace Award to George Lekakis of the Victorian Multicultural Commission.

US Consul General    15 September 2009
US Consul General, Michael Thurston hosted an Iftar Dinner on the 15th of September 2009. The Dinner was organised by the US Consul with logistic support provided by the  Australian Intercultural Society. Consul General, Michael and his family arrived to serve in Melbourne in September 2008. His support for intercultural dialogue and his kind invitation was appreciated by the Muslim leaders of Melbourne.
