Drumming up multicultural support at In one Voice
AN estimated 10,000 people flocked to Caulfield Park on Sunday for a history-making In One Voice — Concert in the Park festival.

On a day which saw Melbourne’s temperature hit 27 degrees, warmth was also flowing at the joint B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission stand, which welcomed a group of around 25 Muslims to a major Jewish communal event for the first time as part of its Building Bridges inter-faith initiative.

The project, which started in December 2004, is co-sponsored by the Australian Intercultural Society and involves 10 Muslim and 10 Jewish families. Building Bridges founder Dr Julie Ruth described the event as a huge success.

“The Muslims were absolutely delighted with the occasion and took up the offer of escorted walks around the park with their Jewish friends to survey the... spectrum of diversity in the Jewish community,” Dr Ruth said.

Audiences were treated to performances from a range of Melbourne bands, choirs and solo artists including YIDcore, Jacob’s Dream, Guava and Israeli singer Oded Gordon. The event also showcased Jewish community artists in the With One Brush exhibition, the best of adult education in the With One Culture workshops, as well as Israeli dancing, sporting activities and plenty of food.
