St John’s Camberwell Church Iftar

In partnership with the St John’s Camberwell Church, the AIS co-hosted its first Iftar dinner at the Church on Thursday, 12 March, marking a meaningful moment of connection and hospitality. The evening was a warm reflection of the church’s openness in welcoming members of the Muslim community, creating a space for shared understanding and friendship.

Guests were welcomed by Ahmet Keskin and Revd Dr Aaron Ghiloni, who both highlighted the importance of interfaith engagement and community harmony. Their remarks set the tone for an evening centred on dialogue, respect, and mutual appreciation.

A thoughtful discussion followed, featuring Dr Hakan Çoruh and Revd Helen Creed. They explored the shared themes of Ramadan and Lent, offering personal reflections on faith, fasting, and spiritual growth. Their insights resonated deeply with attendees, emphasising the common values that unite different traditions.

The program also included scriptural readings, with a recitation from the Qur’an alongside a reading from the Gospel of Saint Luke, symbolising the spirit of interfaith exchange. As the call to prayer marked the breaking of the fast, guests came together to enjoy a meal catered by Serenity Catering, continuing conversations in a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.

Among the attendees was Federal Kooyong MP, Dr. Monique Ryan, who spoke about the health benefits of fasting and the importance of bringing communities together, particularly in times of division. Her reflections reinforced the evening’s message of unity and understanding.

The event stood as a powerful example of how shared spaces and open dialogue can strengthen community bonds, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
